I wish to discuss the age old question… are you a fan of Star Trek or Star Wars?
If you follow this blog, you may have noticed that I love both. I have written many a post about both franchises. But I am in the minority that I like both- many people are either firmly in one camp or the other. So, let’s discuss the similarities and differences of both these space westerns, and I hope you will share why you like one vs the other.
Star Trek started on television in 1966. It’s supposed five year mission lasted only three. An animated series followed in 1973 and the first movie with the original crew debuted in 1977. It presented an idealistic and Utopian future, with Earth moving past it’s racial and cultural differences, and ready to explore space. The tagline was “Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!”. The franchise was reinvigorated with the new television series The Next Generation, which was then followed by Deep Space 9 (DS9), Voyager, Enterprise and most recently Discovery. The movie series was rebooted in 2009 with new actors portraying TOS crew, but on a different timeline to avoid canon issues.

Star Wars was an immediate hit in 1977 when it debuted on the big screen. Set in the past, this more swashbuckling series also had a strong spiritual component and was a straight up adventure. Two more hit movies came out in 1980 & 1983, making stars of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. But that seemed to be that until the series was given a new prequel trilogy starting in 1999 which established how Darth Vader came to be. Again a pause, but starting in 2015 Disney continued the journey of the original three stars with a new trilogy plus stand alone movies set in the Star Wars universe. With the Disney machine behind this franchise, it is set for years to come.

Here are but a few of the differences between the two series:
Science vs Drama
Future vs Past
TV series vs Movies
Logic vs Spiritualism
Gene Rodenberry vs George Lucas
JJ Abrams vs JJ Abrams
( Ha!- He has directed movies from both franchises!)
Paramount vs Disney
Now I shall reveal my favorite of the two…Star Trek! While I might have grown up on Star Wars, it was discovering Star Trek: TNG that established my nerd cred. Star Wars was cool to like then, and still is today. For me to admit that I adored Star Trek took some spunk. My sorority sisters in college were kind of shocked that I liked it so much but they loved me so they put up with my “eccentricities”. I could talk about the various series for hours and eventually wore down my boyfriend (now my husband) into watching the episodes with me. The Star Trek fandom might have less numbers but they make up for it in kindness, as the Star Wars fandom can be toxic at times.
So…are you a Live Long & Prosper fan or a May The Force Be With You? Tell me why!

Well, I love the original trilogy of Star Wars movies, but not such a fan of the prequels or new films tbh. For me, it has to be star Star trek, especially STOS and STTNG, those are my favourites of the Trek Series. While Star Wars might have all the wiz bang spectacle, Star Trek also wins over with its great storylines. I’ve also found Star Trek fandom to be very welcoming, while Star Wars can get a bit toxic and heated at times.

Yes, I agree! Star Trek has had so many deep and layered story lines over the years, esp in TNG & DS9. Plus, I’ve never seen a Trek fan rip another fan’s opinion apart, like I have in Star Wars.

Star Trek seems to be free of the extremes of fandom that exist for other big franchises ie Star Wars, Dr Who, ect. Also found Trek fans are much more open to new fans, much like myself, who haven’t seen every series or film, but are still welcomed. You don’t always get that sadly in other fanbases, which is a shame.

Egads! What is yousa sayin?! OK to be honest I watch (or have watched) both franchises. I owned a Dinky Toys replica Starship Enterprise as a kid (I think it was manufactured by Dinky Toys but I remember it fired plastic disk “Proton Torpedoes”!) and built communicators out of Lego. I also as you know love Star Wars (pre Disney) and have a nice collection of sabers. I can claim the defence that a family friend was the chief projectionist at my local cinema so I got to see (and get goodies) from both franchises.. But as Obi-Wan told Anakin, “Only the Sith deal in absolutes” so as a respected Jedi I don’t pick or choose between the two….they can both teach us things about ourselves and how to treat others!
So to mix metaphors and franchises etc….May The Force Live Long and Prosper With you….Always!

I love how you mixed the two quotes into one! And you absolutely can like both franchises, as they both offer great storytelling!

Thanks, those two quotes have floated round in my head for so long they sometimes got mixed up! I also love how they franchises trigger our imaginations to push for advancements in real life tech and humanitarian efforts.

It’s Star Wars – all the way. Granted, my experience with Star Trek is veeeeeery limited. But I am trying to rectify that and I feel in total and complete love with Doctor Who so that may happen with Star Trek too. But I don’t think it could ever surpass my love of Star Wars. There are so many things I love about it but it’s George Lucas’s intentional and incredible use of theology and mythology that wins me over. There’s nothing quite like it, cinematically, and there is SO MUCH to explore and consider there.
Star Wars fan for life + may the Force be with you 🙂

Since you like the theology and mythology of Star Wars so much, you absolutely need to watch more episodes of Star Trek. DS9 was the series that dealt most with spirituality and religion, so perhaps you should check that series out first.

Aaaahhh!!! I was starting with TNG! Now I don’t know what to do :). However, I grant these are pretty awesome, nerdy problems to have. But you’re my Star Trek guide so if you’re pointing me towards DS9 now then I should probably head in that direction. I’d be far too intimidated to try this without your guidance.

Can you have a place for both in your heart? It’s like making me choose a Doctor – they all have their positives and their drawbacks. I love both, and feel the universes are big enough for them both to co exist. Have their been crossover comics for them like there were for Dr Who and Star Trek???

No official crossover, but I read that there have been “easter eggs” that reference the two franchises including the appearance of the Millennium Falcon in Star Trek: First Contact (Borg fight scene) and R2-D2 appearing in Star Trek (2009).

I don’t think it would be fair for me to answer because I have never appropriately invested my time or energy into the exploration of Star Trek. Therefore, although I am a die-hard Star Wars fan, I am unable to make an informed and unbiased decision. I shall instead state that I personally enjoy Star Wars more, based in part because I have watched very little Star Trek, but I have certainly found myself fascinated by Star Trek at times and do really enjoy the new movies from the past ten years.

While I know your answer would be Star Wars I really appreciate that you are open to the Star Trek awesomeness. The recently rebooted movies certainly gives a new audience a chance to come in and enjoy the franchise.

I see no reason I shouldn’t be open to different franchises. It allows us to more fully enjoy and appreciate the franchises we hold close to the heart.

I don’t know very many people into Star Trek who don’t like Star Wars. I think the fabled rivalry is largely hype. That being said I prefer Star Trek, though I love the original SW trilogy.

I agree, just because you like one doesn’t mean you can’t like the other. They are both sci-fi epicness!

While I appreciate Star Trek and like it, I am more of a Star Wars fan. It’s interesting how Star Trek is more science-based, while Star Wars is more fantasy-based.

You can’t go wrong with either franchise! That both have endured for so long speaks of their great original storylines!
