I was grabbing stuff off my library’s graphic novel shelf, desperate for material ‘cuz my queue for this blog ran out with my last Birds of Prey post. I’d been curious about this title since it came out, and figured with my holiday breaks (two 4 day weekends in a row!!!), I’d get some serious reading and writing done.
Thor is no longer worthy of wielding Mjolnir. He sits on the moon, trying desperately to lift it, but the hammer will not budge for him, nor for any Asgardian. Someone needs to lift it soon, because Frost Giants are invading Midgard. Not about to forsake his duty to Earth, Thor travels to Midgard and attempts to beat them back. While he is gone, someone goes to the moon… and is able to lift Mjolnir! A woman is worthy of the power of Thor! But who is she? Thor Odinson, dismayed and enraged at the hammer’s betrayal, will do anything to get it back.
Lady Thor was a big pull for me. I haven’t read any Thor, but have seen the movies, and that power in the hands of a woman is exciting! The art is beautiful, detailed and colorful with dramatic lighting, positively crackling when thunder comes into play. The writing is witty and heartfelt – you really feel sorry for Thor as he struggles to accept that the power that was once his has fallen to another. Nancy, be proud – I will definitely read more! Lady Thor kicks butt!!!

Yea- more Marvel choices for you! Maybe your best of 2017 will include a Marvel choice, as I had a DC choice in my best of 2016!

As someone who doesn’t regularly read comics, I thought this one wasn’t particularly welcoming to newcomers. I was able to jump into the new Ms. Marvel and Capt. Marvel comics with cursory background knowledge, but it felt like this one was constantly referencing past events I should know about, but didn’t really.

I feel had I read the events of the Secret War I believe I might have understood it a little better, but I wouldn’t say it wasn’t welcoming to newcomers. Enough is explained so you’re not totally lost but I don’t think further reading was necessary.

I understood the gist of the plot, but I just felt like there were a lot more allusions than Ms. Marvel, for example, has.
But maybe Thor just isn’t the comic for me. I do love that Thor is a woman now, though. 🙂

What did you think of issue 5? Don’t you think the feminist messages in it were mishandled? Thundra stopped fighting Thor because they were both women…what? I just wanna hear your interpretation and take on things.

From what I remember (and if I’m thinking of the correct scene you’re mentioning, I’m not as familiar with Marvel as I am DC so I don’t actually remember her name!), Thundra stopped fighting Thor and let herself be taken in because she thought it was cool Thor was now a woman. I’m pretty sure she also said something about it was a one-time deal!
I did have someone tell me when I started reading this Thor run that they thought she was “too” feminist, but honestly, I didn’t get that impression at all. She specifically states in this volume that the world needs a Thor, and she answered that call because the world needs a hero, not to beat us over the head with the fact that she’s a woman.

But there are plenty of heroes in the universe so why would they need Jane of all people? I just don’t understand her motivation to become Thor. Also imagine if a killer is about to kill the president, but then you are his bodyguard so the killer suddenly stops and leaves because you too represent a state of a woman being in a key position. I don’t see how that makes any sense or adds anything well written to the story. If you disagree like you said you do that’s fine, obviously. Just showing you my interpretation. Especially how modern feminism has failed me recently but that’s also a personal opinion.
